    Description

Up for auction is this Imperial Japanese Officer's sword / saber from World War II in excellent condition with its original metal scabbard.  Research indicates that this sword was made for the Imperial Japanese Army starting from about 1875 and was worn by officers during the Russo-Japanese War and through the end of WW II.
The blade is in outstanding condition, with a pronounced hamon or temper line and only slight scabbard wear near the hilt and point (see photos).  There is a small nick in the edge that doesn't show in the photos.  The wire-wrapped horn grip is intact and in very fine condition.  The pierced hilt retains most of its original finish although the backstrap shows wear from age and use.  The hilt has the correct cherry blossom badge (sakura) and is subject to very slight lateral movement, more heard than felt.  The chrome-finished steel scabbard is complete and intact with some wear and discoloration consistent with its age.
The blade measures about 30-¼ inches long, the sword is approximately 35-¾ inches in overall length and weighs about 1-¼ lbs. (a little over 2 lbs. in the scabbard).
