Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this
original
and
old
hand-made Japanese sword, or
Nihonto
, brought back from WWII. The sword is a
Koto
wakizashi, ca. 1500’s. The blade and the mountings are in
Excellent
condition. The sword has a blade length of 17.25 inches (44cm). The hada is a well-grained
itame
hada. The hamon is a Mino-style
gunome midare
that is present the length of the blade ending in a
midare
boshi.
The tang is signed
Kanemoto
.
Kanemoto
was one of the most famous lines of swordsmiths in Japanese history. They worked primarily in the 1500s from Mino province and their swords were famous for their sharpness. They were highly sought out by samurai fighting during this time. This sword may be a later generation, likely ca. late 1500’s. A shinsa should be consulted regarding the signature and generation.
The blade comes in Samurai mountings. They are in
Excellent
condition. The tsuka features a brown silk ito wrap with custom menuki. The tsuba is iron with three accompanying metal seppas. The saya (scabbard) is lacquered black. The saya shows a couple small dents and few areas of missing finish, retaining roughly
92-96%
of original finish. The blade is in
Excllent
condition. There are no nicks along the edge. There are very few areas of rust and some scattered scratches along its length. There do not appear to be any major flaws like hagire.
Given this swords history, I think this piece would be a great addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
