Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this original hand-made Japanese army officers Samurai sword from World War 2. The blade represents the opportunity to own a
gendaito
katana by the well-known WW2 swordsmith
Suetsugu Shigemitsu
in high end Kai Gunto mounts. The blade and the mountings are in
Near MINT
condition. It is a healthy sword and has a blade length of 26.25 inches (67cm). It shows a well-grained
itame
hada. The hamon is a Bizen Ichimonji-style
juka choji midare
that is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a
midare
boshi. The hamon is interspersed with
nie
activities like
yubashiri
and
nie utsuri
.
The blade is signed
Tsukushi Suetsugu.
This is
Suetsugu Shigemitsu,
a well-known WW2-era swordsmith from Kyushu that made
gendaito
in several styles including the Bizen tradition. He was highly ranked at Jo Jo Saku as compared to other wartime swordsmiths.
The mountings are naval version Kai Gunto and are in
Near MINT
condition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. The wrapping is tight with little to no fraying. There is a
brown tassel
attached to the tsuka. The tsuba is solid black with four accompanying metal seppas. The saya (scabbard) is rayskin. It shows no dents and a few spots of missing finish, retaining roughly
94-96%
original finish. The blade is in
Near MINT
condition. There are no nicks, a few very small spots of rust, and few scratches along the blades length. There are no major flaws like hagire.
Given the high-quality craftsmanship, reputation of the swordsmith, and outstanding condition, I
highly
recommend this piece to a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
