Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this
original
and
old
hand-made Japanese sword, or
Nihonto
, brought back from WWII. The sword is a
Koto katana
made by the well-known swordsmith
Bishu Sukesada
, dated
1556
, and certified with
NBTHK Hozon
papers. The blade and the mountings are in
Near MINT
condition. The sword has a blade length of 27.25 inches (69cm). There are well-crafted
bo-hi
, or grooves, down both sides of the blade. It shows a well-grained
itame
hada mixed with a smaller burl
ko-mokume
hada. The hamon is a Bizen-style
choji
based on
suguha
that is vibrant. The hamon is present the length of the blade ending in a thick
midare
boshi that has some streaking
kaen
. There are many activities like
ashi, yo,
and
yubashiri
in and along the hamon.
The tang is signed
Bishu Osafune Sukesada Saku
and dated
Koji Ni Nen Ni Gatsu Hi
, or a day in Spring, 1556.
Bishu Sukesada
reflects a long line of smiths working in Bizen provice from ca. 1500-1870 that are well-known and respected. They were known for making many swords to supply sides in the Japanese civil wars of the 1500s. This looks to be a generation from the height of Sukesada workmanship
.
The blade comes with
NBTHK Hozon
papers attesting to the authenticity and quality of the blade.
The blade comes in shirasaya mountings. They are in
Near MINT
condition and feature a
sayagaki
attribution on the saya
.
The blade is in
Near MINT
condition. There are no nicks, a few very small and minor spots of rust, and very few scratches. There are a couple small lateral wares or areas of coarse grain. There are no major flaws like hagire.
Given the high degree of craftsmanship displayed, NBTHK papers, and the reputation of the swordsmith, I
highly recommend
this sword to a collector of Japanese swords or WWII militaria.
