    Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this
    original
    and
    old
    hand-made Japanese sword, or
    Nihonto
, brought back from WWII. The sword is a rare
    Koto
    nagamaki naoshi
    and signed by the swordsmith
    Kunimitsu
in samurai mounts. The blade and the mountings are in
    Excellent
condition. The sword has a blade length of 15.5 inches (39 cm). It shows a strong shape of a
    nagamaki naoshi
, or polearm, with a slender
    shobu zukuri
construction. The hada is a well grained
    itame
hada that mixes with a straighter
    masame
hada. The hamon is a well-implemented
    gunome midare
hamon that is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a slightly
    maru
    boshi. There are activities like
    nijuba
    and
    uchinoke
    in and along the hamon.
    The tang is signed
    Kunimitsu
    and is
    suriage
    , or shortened, with two
    mekugi-ana
pegholes. Given the shape, length, and workmanship, the sword looks to date to the 1300-1400’s. The sword also features workmanship similar to the
    Yamato
tradition. There were very many swordsmiths signing Kunimitsu over time, including some during the 1300-1400’s timeframe related to either a
    Yamato
school or similar school such as
    Ko-Uda
. I highly recommend having this sword submitted to a Shinsa.
The blade comes in original Samurai mountings. They are in
    Excellent
condition. The tsuka has a silk ito wrapping with little to no fraying. The tsuba is iron
    sukashi
with two accompanying metal seppas. The saya (scabbard) is a high quality textured lacquer and is in
    Excellent
condition. It shows very few small areas of missing finish, retaining roughly
    ~94-97%
original finish. It also shows a high quality maroon
    sageo
    knot. The blade is in
    Excllent
condition. It shows no nicks, a few small scattered spots of rust, and some scratches along its length. There are a few small lateral
    ware
along its length. There do not appear to be any major flaws like hagire
Given the age of the sword, the workmanship, and the condition, I think this sword would be an excellent addition for a collector of Japanese swords or WWII militaria.
