    Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this
    original
    and
    old
    hand-made Japanese sword, or
    Nihonto
, brought back from WWII. The sword is a Shinto katana, ca. 1700s, signed
    Hizen Tadayoshi
    , and is
    samurai-mounted
. The blade and the mountings are in
    Very Good
condition. The sword has a blade length of 27.5 inches (70 cm). It shows a strong and powerful shape and construction. The blade features a well-grained
    ko-itame
hada. The hamon is a well-implemented and active nie-based
    suguha
hamon. The hamon is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a thick
    maru
boshi with turnback. There is a strong
    nioi guchi
    of nie with
    nie hotsure
    and
    inazuma
    in and along the hamon.
    The tang is signed tachi-mei
Hizen no Kuni Omi no Kami Tadayoshi
    .
    Hizen Tadayoshi
was a famous line of swordsmiths working in Hizen province from 1600 to 1860s. Their swords were renowned for their sharpness and high quality craftsmanship.  They were highly sought out by Samurai during the Edo period and are still highly sought out by collectors today. Based on the signature, this would be the
    5
    th
    generation
    , or
    Godai Tadayoshi
working circa 1750. He is highly ranked Jo Saku by Fujishiro. This sword needs additional research and a Shinsa should be consulted as final authority.
The blade comes in original Samurai mountings. They are in
    Very Good
condition. The tsuka wooden with a sewn leather cover. The leather shows some age and wear. The tsuba is an iron tsuba and old with two accompanying metal seppas. The saya (scabbard) is a leather covered black lacquered saya. The leather is supple and well aged with the underlying original samurai saya in excellent condition. The blade is in
    Very Good
condition. There are a few small micro nicks along the edge. There are some small spots of rust and some scratches along its length. The tip is knocked off by 1mm. There are also a couple spots of coarse grain. There do not appear to be any major flaws like hagire.
Given the swords history and reputation of the swordsmith, I think this sword would be an excellent addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
